Magazine Covers
Magazine Cover
What's the first thing that a buyer will see when they pick up your magazine while shopping around? The cover of course! Therefore, your cover needs to be eye-catching and unique in order for it to attract the eyes of a casual browser. Having an interesting and unique cover can allow your magazine to stand out to people, which leads them to reading it. The overall combination of the masthead, subheading, main image, coverlines, and all the other elements can make for a great cover as long as you balance them. When drafting my covers, I was able to use these elements to create my designs. Let's go ahead and take a look.
Cover 1:
Cover 1 |
This cover uses a collection of conventions to produce the following design that you can see. the main image is a close up of a model wearing a bold makeup look. She is posing with her hands creating for an interesting look. Her expression is very simple and bold as well. The masthead and the subheading both use a bolded sans serif font which allows for a sleek and modern appearance. For the coverlines, I chose a regular sans serif font which also gives off a relaxed yet clean look. I placed the masthead where it would usually be; the top center. This allows for the masthead to be the main focus of the issue's cover because not only is it bold, but the size is very big compared to the rest of the text. As for the coverlines, they vary from the main genres of the magazine, the popular topics included, to quotes from the magazine. The barcode is placed in the top left corner instead of the bottom just to provide space for the "say less to..." coverline. The price of the magazine in USD is placed in the top right corner instead of below the barcode. The model will mostly be wearing black and white. The overall cover will have a black and white theme as well. However, the model will be wearing bold, red lipstick as well as red earrings to accent that. Overall, the cover is very similar to the basic fashion magazines but the color scheme and part of the layout is as well. While it breaks some of the usual conventions, it's very elegant and simple.

Cover 5:
For the final cover, it is a close of shot of a model facing sideways with her head looking at the camera. The look she gives is bold and extreme. Her makeup is also very bold and outstanding. The masthead is a little different in which it uses a sans serif font instead which is usually more relaxed for readers. The coverlines are all focused on mentioning important figures and celebrities included in the magazines inside articles. Their first and last name is huge with the reason why they are mentioned put right below that-which is usually a huge achievement. The month and year of publication is below the masthead on the right. The website and barcode are both on the bottom left as well as the price of the magazine so that they do not take the attention of the reader away. The model on the cover has her first and last name also both put on the front as well as why she is the main subject in the issue. Overall, this magazine is very focused on one topic. The colors will be bold and colorful to create a nice and trendy look.
Conclusion
As I created the designs seen above, I think that my favorite is the third one. The colors that it uses along with all its elements are very powerful and unique. While it sticks to some of the basic conventions, it also has very unique ideas mixed in to make it more sophisticated. Overall, the designs are all unique and can have their own combinations that allow them to be attractive to the eyes. When talking about fashion magazines, they have alot of unique conventions that you have to be aware of in order to make the most attractive design. in addition, focusing on these codes and conventions is the best way to make the prefect design.
